The following are the base vowels that have short pronunciation (The dashes are there as place holder for a consonant)

-ะ (a)

It makes "a" sound like in English, as in "baah", "barn", "yarn", etc. It goes to the right of the consonant. It is the short version of "-า".

-ิ (i)

It makes "i" sound like in English, as in "bib", "sit", "pit", etc. It goes on top of the consonant. It is the short version of "-ี".

-ุ (u)

It makes "u" sound like in English, as in "stupid", "pudding", "flute", etc. It goes below the consonant. It is the short version of "-ู".

-ึ (u)

This sound is not in English but it makes the same "u" sound as -ุ like in English but smile while you say it, It goes on top of the consonant. It is the short version of "-ือ". We have not covered "-ือ" yet because it is not a standalone and has special rules.
