We already have ะ. Why do we need another way to write it? It's because Thai is a
dramatic diva and she needs to feel special with her high maintenance rules to keep you
on your toes.
There are 2 ways to use รร.
The first one, if there is no ending consonant, it is pronounced like it is "-ัน". For
example,
word
meaning
pronunciation
กรรไกร
scissors
ภรรยา
wife
บรรทัด
line (of writing)
บรรณารักษ์
librarian
บรรจุ
contain, hold, pack
บรรยาย
narrate
อัศจรรย์
miraculous, marvel
สวรรค์
heaven, paradise
มหัศจรรย์
amazing, astonishing
The second way, if there is an ending consonant, use it as "-ั" + the ending consonant.
For example,
word
meaning
pronunciation
กรรม
karma
ธรรมชาติ
nature
พรรคพวก
friends, partisans
รัฐธรรมนูญ
constitution
สรรพคุณ
properties, qualities, effects
อุปสรรค
obstacle
นิทรรศการ
exhibition
Once you get used to it, it's not too bad. The fact that this exists as another rule to remember is just annoying.
